Basement Design - Finding Furniture That Fits

Imagine this: the colors are just right for your basement design; the lights are on and the floor rugs are in place. In short, everything seems perfect except that there are no equipment or things yet in place. Naturally, this should be the next thing on your mind once you're done with designing your basement. After all, you want to hang around in your basement so you need things to entertain yourself with. You can't just choose items in random though. There are some tips you might want to follow when you pick what goes into your basement.

Weight of Objects

It would be great if you could put some tables, chairs and couches in your basement. You would naturally need all of these so you can relax, play games or work on a hobby. Some basement owners may also consider adding some audio-visual equipment and perhaps some musical instruments. Do remember though that basements could be prone to flooding. If you think your basement isn't going to be spared in the next wet season then it would be best if you had basement equipment and furniture that you can quickly move out in case of emergencies.

Value of Things

You might want to have an expensive flat screen TV in your basement. You might also want to have an expensive or rare painting on the wall to complement your basement design. Other valuable things that may find their way into your basement include family heirlooms and sports memorabilia. Again, you should think twice about putting valuable items in your basement. Moisture and flood could destroy priceless items.

Electrical Gadgets

Television sets, music players and game consoles are great additions to a basement. Do make sure though that there is sufficient protection against possible electrocution just in case these gadgets come in contact with water or moisture.

Organized Themes

You would want the basement to welcome everybody in the family. You would however also want to make sure that you don't end up with cluttered space. You could prevent this by creating a theme for your basement. You can opt for a sports or hobby theme and include items that conform to the theme.

Basement design is one of the most enjoyable things you can get yourself into. Just make sure that you follow good tips for decorating and designing to ensure that your basement will truly become the haven you envisioned.

Fireplace Design Ideas

Are you trying to find some inspiring information about fireplace design ideas? There are some basic elements to any fireplace that are generally addressed in turn, in order to come up with a complete fireplace design. There are three main components to any fireplace design.

The three primary components to fireplace design include the hearth, the firebox and the type of opening that is employed between the firebox and the room in which the fireplace is located. The hearth is the area outside of the firebox, in general. The firebox is the area in which the fire itself will be burned.

Hearths

Let's first talk about hearths. A hearth may be flush with the floor, raised above the floor, or sunk down lower than the floor. Additionally, there may be no hearth to speak of at all. In these cases the firebox should be at least two inches above the floor, as the hearth is what helps protect the floor from the heat of the fire.

Another type of hearth may include hearth seats of various kinds. The most traditional and popular type of fireplace with hearth seats are the kinds that feature simply two blocks on either side of the firebox opening.

Fireboxes

As with the hearth types, the different kinds of fireboxes generally have mainly to do with the height relative to the floor and / or hearth. There are raised fireboxes, flush fireboxes that are the same height as the floor, and there are dropped fireboxes that are somewhat lower than the hearth and / or floor in front of the fireplace.

Fireplace Openings

Of course the most widely utilized type of fireplace opening is the rectangular opening. Generally, a rectangular opening will be just that: rectangular in shape. However, even with rectangular openings, the sides typically flare outward from the firebox toward the face of the fireplace.

There are flat arch top openings where the sides are straight, yet the tope of the opening has a slight arch to the shape. As with the traditional rectangular opening, the sides typically flare outward from the firebox toward the face of the fireplace.

There are full arch fireplace openings where the opening contains no straight lines. These types of fireplace openings have one continuous curve all around the fireplace opening. This is the type of opening you are probably used to seeing in American Southwestern style fireplaces.

There are also corner fireplace openings that allow for there to be two open sides to the fireplace. As the name suggests, a corner opening fireplace is situated in such a way that an entire corner section of the firebox is exposed.

There are U-shaped fireplace openings where the firebox is exposed on three sides, the front, as well as the two side areas. These last two types of fireplace openings will generally produce better heat radiation. If you will be using your fireplace to heat your home, and not merely as decoration these are certainly worth looking into. Home Renovation - Make Your New Renovation Match Your Old House

A large percentage of people who renovate their homes do so to update, add value or prepare their home for sale. All too often though, home owners plan a renovation with no thought of making the new work blend with their older home.

This can result in the new work looking like an ugly wart stuck onto the original home. This often even effects the resale value of the home.

This is because when people shop for an older home they are looking because they like the style and look of the older homes and bad renovations will turn them away.

This means that you should consider the era your home was built in to make sure that renovations and upgrades flow naturally together in your older home. This is most noticeable on new exterior walls of additions, windows, doors and door hardware, light fixtures and things like heating vents, trim and flooring.

That doesn't mean that you need to forgo any new conveniences or not make improvements to increase energy efficiency or convenience. It just means that you need to carefully consider the style of your home before you act.

Look around neighborhoods that are the same age as your home to get ideas about how other people have successfully blended upgrades in their homes.

When you choose a contractor make sure that he has done renovation work with your age of home and understands your goals. Fortunately there are several companies that offer period style hardware designs in new materials.

A good project should make it hard to recognize where the older house ends and the new work begins.

Bob Current writes about a variety of subjects including tips on home renovation. Get his free report about tips for Choosing The Best Contractor for your renovation at http://www.homeimprovementtips.info

Choose A Bath Over A Shower Any Day

Taking a shower will leave us feeling clean and fresh but it will not provide as many benefits as taking a bath. Let's take a look at the benefits of bathing, and you can decide for yourself, which is better for you.

Showers are quick, but baths encourage us to relax and take our time. Taking a bath is more soothing than taking a shower, will help to draw out toxins from the body and if bathing with bath salts you can actually replenish your body with essential minerals required to keep your skin soft and supple. Taking a bath also will help to relieve stress, and gives stressed people a chance to have a time to take a deep breath and stop for a while, and put things in perspective. You can combine aromatherapy with your bath to create an exceptionally therapeutic experience.

If you have a cold, there is nothing better than a bath to clear congested lungs and relieve sinus pressure. Even breathing in the steam while taking a bath is really healthy and a sore throat can feel a lot more comfortable.

Taking a bath, and especially with bath salts warms your body, eases muscles aches and pains, and is especially nice during the cold, dreary winter months. Bathing can also be very romantic. Between the warm water, sweet aromas and moisturizing bath bubbles, baths are just plain sexy when shared. Light some candles around the tub, play soft music, and step into the bath together - you will have a memorable, romantic evening.

So next time you think you are in a hurry to take a quick shower, slow down and think again - Maybe it's time to take a nice warm relaxing bath.

Central Vacuum Systems For Your Home

What is a central vacuum system? A central vacuum system is made up of a group of inlets that are connected via piping to an integral power and canister unit. The inlets are generally wall mounted, but can also be floor mounted. Each inlet allows you to vacuum 700 to 800 square feet. A flexible hose, approximately 30 feet long plugs into the outlets. Numerous types of suction heads are available to connect to the end of the hose, including power beaters.

The power/canister unit is usually mounted in a garage or basement.

Most handymen can install a central vacuum system, without the need for professional assistance. The most complex part of the installation is physically running the two inch plastic piping from the power unit to the inlets.

There are many reasons to consider the installation of a central vacuum system for your home:

  • Relieves Allergy Symptoms: As the power unit and canister are mounted outside of the living area of the home, exhaust air from the vacuum is not circulated back into the room being vacuumed which substantially improves the air quality in the room. Coupled with good filtration, many manufacturers are using HEPA filtration, almost 100% of the contacted dirt, dust mites, pollen, dander, and other allergens are removed and contained.
  • More Power: Central vacuum systems deliver up to five times more suction power than conventional upright or canister vacuum cleaners. More suction equates to better overall cleaning.
  • Larger Canister: The canister that is attached to the power unit holds as much as six gallons of dirt, 10 times more dirt than conventional upright or canister vacuum cleaners. You can vacuum longer without the inconvenience of changing bags or emptying canisters.
  • Convenience: Have you ever tried to vacuum a ceiling fan, drapes, blinds? Usually the hose is not long enough, even with the extension pipes you end up lifting the vacuum cleaner in the air in order to reach the corners and tops. With the long hose associated with a central vacuum system, reaching corners, ceilings, and other difficult areas is easy.

Have a multi-story home? Then you have faced the inconvenience of carrying your vacuum cleaner up and down stairs, not to mention the difficulty in actually vacuuming stair cases, usually it means trying to position the vacuum on the steps in order to reach all points.

  • Quiet Because the power unit is not in the living area of the home, there is far less ambient noise when vacuuming. You can hear the phone ring, listen to music and answer the front door.

If you are looking for a home improvement project that will be of benefit to the entire family consider a central vacuum system. As with any home appliance, it is wise to investigate the specifications, features, and accessories available before you choose the manufacturer and model that suits your requirements best.

Renovation-Headquarters has additional information on the installation of a central vacuum system in your home.

Where To Find A Replacement Canopy For Your Gazebo

Owning a gazebo with canopy top is a great way to spend time
outdoors without battling the hot sun or rain. These gazebos
are easy to assemble, affordable, available in a wide range of
materials, colors, and styles, and a great addition to any
backyard. With a canopy gazebo, you can spend time relaxing in
the shade with some ice tea and a great book, kicking back with
friends on a starry night, or dining on grilled chicken and
hamburgers with the family.

Today, canopy gazebo designs have improved dramatically. What
you will now find are canopies made from new and improved
material that is fade resistant, mildew resistant, scratch
resistant, and heavier to hold up better overall. In fact, many
canopy gazeboes are so well made that the manufacturer will
offer a five-year warrant on the canopy portion. However,
sometimes things do happen so if you need to find a replacement
canopy for a gazebo, you are in luck.

Rather than toss out a perfectly good gazebo, you can simply
find a replacement canopy for the gazebo. In fact, if you have
an older style gazebo, this would be an ideal time to update,
choosing a more contemporary style and material. This way, you
can continue enjoying your old frame but now with a beautiful
and fresh facelift. In most cases, a replacement canopy for a
gazebo is very affordable, which would of course depend largely
on the materials chosen and overall size needed.

We suggest when looking for a replacement canopy for a gazebo
that you go with fabric such as weather resistant nylon. Sturdy,
durable, and visually pleasing, this would make a great
impression. Although the replacement features of canopies vary
from one manufacturer to another, many feature special Velcro
straps so the canopy can be installed onto the existing gazebo
frame easily. In addition to single tiered canopy replacement,
you will also discover multi-tiered canopies, as well as various
colors and shapes.

To give you an idea of what you will find on the market, a
beautifully designed replacement canopy for your canopy, let us
say a standard 10x10-foot size and made from durable polyester
vinyl would cost just under $100. However, if you keep your
eyes open, chances are you can find a number of sales or
discounted prices. Included with this replacement canopy design
is a ventilated top construction, which is made to fit easily
over the gazebo frame.

Another recommendation we would make is to choose a replacement
canopy for your gazebo with reinforced corners. This way, you
know you have a tight, secure fit. Most important when choosing
a new canopy is paying attention to the size. Unfortunately,
differences in gazebo designs to include roof pitch, beam
lengths, and so on can make a huge difference in the way in
which a universal canopy fits. Therefore, you might consult
with your local gazebo or home improvement company to make sure
you get the right size for your particular gazebo.

Provide Protection For Your Entrance With a Porch Enclosure

A porch enclosure is usually an enclosure built around the main entrance of the home to protect it from the elements of weather. It usually has one or two entrances and a square or curved top. Quite often such an enclosure is built between two offsets on the front of the house, but it can also be a bay extending out from the house. The size of the enclosed porch depends on how you plan to use it. You will need to have a larger porch if you want to place chairs there so you can enjoy the outdoor scenery without having to go outdoors.

Generally an enclosed porch is a fabricated unit made of glass panels. The doors are specially made to fit in the aluminum rails. There are many different designs in shapes and sizes of these on the market and you can have one custom designed to meet your needs.

Some of the benefits of using such an enclosure for a porch include:

* keeping snow and ice away from the direct entrance to your home, which will in turn keep moisture from seeping in
* preventing water from leaking in through the door in times of heavy rain
* added security for the home
* serving as a buffer that prevents heat from escaping during the winter
* offering ventilation during the summer

When you have an enclosure around the entrance, you can have a wooden door instead of having to opt for a steel door. If you do have a steel door, the protection of such a porch will ease your concerns about the warranty on the door. The addition of a porch will add a touch of class to the home and increase its resale value.

It is not hard to install such an enclosure after you have the exterior of the home complete. The glass panels are designed so that they fasten together to form a wall and the doors are mounted to this base. Some of the enclosures also have the ability to adjust to uneven walls and floors so that nothing will look out of place.

Why Bathroom Remodeling Will Add Life to Your Home

There are many ways to remodel a bathroom and depending on how extensive of a remodel project you want, you could spend three or four times the normal amount if you are doing a lot of tile work, granite counters, new cabinetry, etc. Usually the older the bathroom the more extensive and expensive the remodel project will be.

There are so many things to consider when renovating your bathroom. Replacing the current window with a larger one will add light and also give you an opportunity to add a more energy efficient window. Maybe you can add a skylight, this is an excellent way to bring in more light and increase the feeling of spaciousness. Replacing fixtures with modern designs can make a bathroom more decorative and style that not only looks good, but is functional. There is a wide price range for light fixtures, so you can easily pick one that fits your budget. Replacing a toilet can be a simple thing if you avoid the most common mistakes made by many homeowners.

Remember, the door fixtures will be the first thing you see when you enter any room so you might want to start here! Remember, if you don't fell 100% comfortable with or confident in the possible outcome, stop and meet with your contractor immediately and discuss an alternative route. Piece of mind is priceless especially with a project of this importance. After all, it is your sanctuary.

A shower remodel is also a perfect time to experiment with shower heads. There are many types, styles and brands you can choose from. The type of concrete used for shower walls and floors is highly engineered and a must if your looking for the perfect job. Tiles are generally durable, and you won't have to worry about replacing them if you choose the right material.

Tile is also an area where you have a wide range of choices. From sheet linoleum to ceramic tile the choices are numerous. Tile mosaics are especially popular in Mediterranean style bathrooms. Tile can also be used as decorative design pieces (glazed, glass mosaic or quarry styles).

Bathroom flooring, more than anything else, can have a stunning effect on the overall look of a bathroom; choose bathroom flooring wisely and you will achieve the bathroom of your dreams? Many homeowners like to install below floor heating, which is recommended with a stone or concrete floor.

You can install hardwood floors on the floor of your Bathroom, provided that they are coated with a water-proof finish. Many people will opt for this type of flooring in this part of the house because it provides warmth and has the effect of creating a soft relaxing atmosphere.

Neutral colors are probably your best bet and will last for many years to come. Some contractors will recommend using self leveling cement but good old poured concrete screened floors is the only way to get that perfect job. Selecting a contractor by referrals is also the best way to choose the right company for the job.

A Friend and I Learn How to Build a Fireplace

Learning how to build a fireplace is not a simple matter for anyone I know of. Most people that I know would love to hire out these kinds of projects. There are always those very exceptional folks who enjoy taking on these kinds of projects for the sheer accomplishment of it. I have a delightful friend who begins many of these tasks, but never quite seems to finish them. When I go to his home, it's like visiting a warehouse for misplaced and unused objects. It makes me stop and wonder!

His most recent project, and now mine, is in learning how to build one's own fireplace. I know nothing about this which I suppose says a good deal about what I do know! Of the many things I have read on the subject, one of the most important things to realize is that a sound foundation is crucial. The foundation needs to be made of something that will not burn. Sounds obvious and reasonable but apparently not so to everyone. Another important consideration in learning how to build a fireplace is to recognize and understand what your local code enforcement rulings are. It is best to accept what they are and work with them, not against them. Time is short and so is money. So, don't create a structure that has to be torn down in the end because you didn't think someone would come around and check out your construction.

Also, I really want to nail down the basics regarding safety considerations. I want the smoke and other fuel by-products to vent out properly. I don't want to be suffocated after all of my hard work! I suspect that the neighbors don't either. The rest of my concerns are more easy to manage. I know what my budget will allow for and I know what component materials I want to use. I have a preference for brick, red brick to be specific. I can't imagine having a fireplace made of any other material. Well, I am ready to begin the actual building of my fireplace and I am excited. Wish me well!

A Conservatory and How to Enhance Your Home's Value

A conservatory can be an extended living space for the home, but it can also be an often used area in the summer. The real problem is that when you install a conservatory, the space for your lawns or garden becomes constricted. This may be a case of compromise much like living in a glass room to enjoy beauty of nature in summer.

Some important factors, which are to be kept in mind while setting up conservatories, are direction in which it faces sunlight. For example, conservatories that face north fall short of getting ample sunlight. The extra heat accumulated also effects household items present in rooms like furniture and may lead to extra cost replacing them. Some of the mechanisms to get cooling effect in conservatories are tapestries and Conservatory blinds.

Nowadays, there are many offline dealers and online websites, which can supply or can even install conservatories. They make the supplied conservatory a perfect extension of your home. However, you can opt to make your conservatory in your own unique way. These are popularly known as DIY projects that you can enjoy in your spare time. This will give you an opportunity to experience the thrill of constructing your own conservatories and can help you save some money in these tight economic times.

Conservatories are also available in ready to use format where you just need small alignment adjustments to get it done. If you are thinking to assemble your own conservatory then keep the following, things in mind so avoid any further issues:-

1) If there are manholes in path of your proposed conservatory fill it up completely with a cover that is sealed tight

2) To amass rainwater by the wall, some conservatories like Edwardian or Victorian come with a roof that is boxed in

3) Height restriction should be assessed carefully, through hipped-back or low-pitched modulations

A conservatory provides you with extra yards of covered spaces where you can relax and spend some time. You can entertain your guests or visitors and it acts as great place to relax during summer days. Take care to include right furniture, right blinds and right utility objects to enjoy these to maximum.

On a monetary aspect, a conservatory can add a great value to a house. On average, this can give up to 11000 pounds for owners in UK. Another good aspect is that a conservatory seldom changes a home's structure. This is something aside but an integral part of a home.

Vince Samios writes about Conservatory Furniture, including Cane Conservatory Furniture, Wicker Conservatory Furniture, and Rattan Conservatory Furniture.

Job Site Safety

Whether working on an industrial construction site or standing on a ladder in the kitchen to change a light bulb, safety should be the primary concern. An enjoyable, satisfying remodeling project is one completed in a safe and timely manner. The common temptation to cut corners in terms of safety is the number one reason for job site injuries.

Yet the idea that safety and your remodeling plans clash is itself a myth. As most business owners would tell you, the repercussions of job site hazards far outweigh any extra time taken to ensure a safe working environment. This goes for homeowners and DIY projects as well, even more so in fact...Who's going to take your place should you fall off a ladder due to improper use? No one. Instead, the project will remain incomplete until you are fully recovered or you'll have to pay for a contractor to come in and finish the job. Therefore, taking some preemptive steps, including a possible change in mindset, to do the work safely will have undeniable benefits for you and your remodel.

STEP 1: Educate yourself

Knowing how to properly use tools and equipment is tantamount to a safe job site. Any contractor or construction worker can tell you about the first time they used a circular saw or climbed high up the rungs of a ladder. They would tell you how awkward and somewhat intimidating those first experiences were, not to mention the obvious danger involved in improper use of that equipment. To learn in detail about job site safety, as it stands on a professional level, check out the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Jobsite Safety Handbook. More than that, simply read the manufacturer's instructions on any tools or equipment you purchase or rent.

STEP 2: Use your common sense

By far the best tool for job site safety is your own common sense. The odds are if you are uncomfortable in any situation on the job, then you should give safety a second thought. Is it safe to stand on a step ladder that does not have all four feet squarely on the ground? If a power tool is making strange noises and bent or otherwise physically damaged, does it make sense to continue using it? No. Most of job site safety simply involves awareness and common sense. By no means should these warnings work to paralyze you with fear at the foot of a ladder, but understanding safety and being aware of your surroundings will actually help eliminate that fear and give you the confidence and wherewithal to get the job done safe and sound.

STEP 3: Keep it clean.

Cleanliness is the foundation of job site safety. When you are in the midst of a fast-paced project, carrying tools and materials from the cut station to install or walking around with thoughts and numbers running through your mind, you are likely not as in tune as you could be to what's on the floor in piles or scattered about. Trip hazards are a common cause of job site injury. Again, common sense comes into play. You know your awareness is somewhat compromised when in the throes of a day's hard work, so thinking ahead and cleaning the job site at the end of each day will not only make the work site safer but allow you to get right to work in the morning when your mind and awareness are as fresh as they can be.

STEP 4: Hire a contractor

Contractors around the world have stories of DIY disasters in which homeowners got themselves in over their head and had to call in professional reinforcements, often costing the homeowner more money (and possibly health) than simply calling a contractor in the first place. The general advice here is to know your limits. Rushing into projects often results in frustration and anger as mistakes and unforeseen obstacles stack up. Frustration and anger in turn lead to a lack of awareness which often leads to an unsafe work environment, leaving you insulted and injured. At the very least, contact local contractors for free estimates and the weigh the costs before getting started. You may just find that paying a contractor, who will have the experience, equipment, and manpower to safely complete the project, is well worth the added expense.
